Five-day field course on the study of volcanism processes and related magmatic systems

April 13-17, 2026 (in Russian)
April 20-24, 2026 (in English)
5 days (53 academic hours)
Zhetysu region, Katutau mountain range

About Course

The field course is focused on studying volcanic processes and related magmatic and hydrothermal systems.

You will learn about the types of volcanic eruptions (effusive, explosive, extrusive), calderas, ignimbrites, alteration types, and the structure of volcanoplutonic systems.

The main emphasis is placed on practical mapping, determining rock types in the field, and analyzing mineralogical relationships.

Upon completion of the training, you will gain practical skills for working in volcanogenic areas and an understanding of how this knowledge can be applied to the search for Cu-Mo-Au and epithermal deposits. The format is field-based, with travel in off-road vehicles, visits to natural outcrops, and short theoretical lectures on site.

The Zhongar Alatau is an open sky laboratory to study the Late Paleozoic subaerial calc-alkaline volcanism of the southern limb of Balkhash-Ili terrain. The good exposure of the work area makes it possible to trace a series of volcanic, intrusive units and associated metasomatism. Zhongar Alatau comprises subaerial, mainly felsic to intermediate volcanic formations, the youngest of which is ~248 Ma.

The course content is designed for early and mid-career Exploration, Mine geologists, Academic researchers, and Geo teachers of all levels.

Level of preparation — intermediate (basic knowledge of petrography and stratigraphy is assumed).

Itinerary and additional information

April-May is the peak season for ticks, so it is recommended to undergo the standard vaccination schedule against tick-borne encephalitis, which consists of 3 doses, 0-1(3)-9(12) months, and to follow the rules for protection against bites.

The study area is located within the Altyn-Emel National Nature Park, therefore, the collection of grab samples is prohibited. Chip samples measuring 5 x 5 cm are permitted.
